Cooking is something that everyone needs to learn how to do and will need at some point in their lives. Most would agree that they love to eat, especially food that is prepared by a loved one! Nevertheless, many people would like to improve their skills. With the information here, though, you can give your culinary skills a boost.
Brining is a technique for preparing poultry. Try soaking poultry, such as chicken, turkey, goose or duck, for 60 minutes in a brine solution prior to cooking. This makes the flavor of the poultry exponentially more flavorful.
If your recipe calls for slicing meat very thin, you can do this most easily by partly freezing the meat first. If you are cooking an exotic dish that requires thinly sliced meat, this is the best way to do it. When you freeze meat, it makes the slicing much cleaner because it prevents the meat from being as flexible. Before you cook the sliced meat, however, you must first allow the strips to thaw.
To prevent waste of leftovers, take all of your veggies and meat that is in your refrigerator, and make a stir fry with some rice. Day old rice tastes best in stir fried rice because of its drier taste, but fresh rice will also work. Just add slightly less water than normal. Fry your vegetables and chopped meat in vegetable oil, then throw in your rice an season with some soy sauce, ginger, garlic and other spices of your choice.
Keep your supplies and utensils well organized. Poorly organized supplies cause confusion and mess. Try keeping similar items in one area. For example, keep all of your spices in one cabinet. You can even organize them further by grouping them according to color, flavor, type or any other effective method.
Make sure that you never use a wine in your food that you would not normally drink. Because wine will have a big impact on the flavor of your food, a bad wine can result in a bad meal. Look through your grocery store to find wines that are used specifically for cooking.
You can fix a pie crust. If you overworked the pie dough, that could cause it to get cracks. If you put a small amount of cold water over them and then gently rub it with your fingers, you can repair the cracks. Cracks on the top pie crust can be repaired by brushing with milk, and sprinkling with a little sugar. When your pie is done baking, the top crust will have an appetizing golden glaze that will conceal any minor imperfections.
When you purchase fruits that are not quite ripe, put them in a paper bag to ripen. Ethylene gas is produced when fruits ripen. A paper bag allows air to circulate, yet also keeps in enough ethylene gas to help the fruits ripen and enhance the flavor.
If you are making a salad ahead of time, put some thought into how you layer its ingredients. If you don't want to send up with a wilted and soggy mess, put juicy ingredients in the bowl first, and then layer upwards to produce like lettuce on the top.
A great way to use random vegetables in your refrigerator is to make some fried rice. Using day-old cool rice is best, however, if you have to make it fresh, make the rice drier by cutting down on the water a bit. Just add your meat of choice to a large pan or wok, then throw in the veggies followed by the rice and some seasonings. In no time you'll have a meal.
Do you feel like you're wasting money when you throw away a piece of moldy fruit? Is it possible to save at least a portion by getting rid of only the bad part? In truth, half-rotten fruit cannot be salvaged in any safe manner. Toss it in the trash; you may not be able to see all of the areas that are affected by the mold, and if you eat any of it, you can become very ill.
Do some of your prep work the day before to avoid being too busy to enjoy yourself or causing stress. This allows you to serve a fresh, healthy meal to your family even when you are pressed for time. Considered chopping up stir-fry veggies and having them ready to go for the next night. Casseroles are also something easy to prepare that you can have 100 percent ready to go, and simply store them in the fridge overnight.
As you are preparing mashed potatoes for a meal, be sure to use hot, but not boiling milk to stir in with the potatoes. The end result is lighter, fluffier mashed potatoes. Nobody wants to eat mashed potatoes full of lumps.
